# Create Your First Applet

In this guide, you will create an Applet connected to the **Asset Check-In** table created in the previous guide.

Rather than adding every field manually, DC Works can use an existing table to automatically generate a ready-made Applet containing the table’s fields and a standard layout.

### Start a new Applet

1. Select **Applets** from the left navigation menu.
2. Select **New Applet +**.

*Select New Applet + to begin creating an Applet.*

The Applet creation wizard opens in a new browser tab.

### Choose how to create the Applet

The wizard provides several methods for creating an Applet:

* **Build from Scratch**
* **Use Existing Table**
* **Select App Template**
* **Blank**

For this tutorial:

1. Select **Use Existing Table**.

*Choose Use Existing Table to generate an Applet from an existing DC Works table.*

{% hint style="info" %}
The other creation methods will be covered later. Using an existing table is the quickest way to build this tutorial Applet because its fields and initial layout are generated automatically.
{% endhint %}

### Select the database and table

Under **Use Existing Table**:

1. Select **Getting Started** from the **Database** list.
2. Select **Asset Check-In** from the **Table** list.

DC Works automatically displays the following table fields:

* Asset ID
* Employee or Location
* Check-In Date and Time
* Condition
* Notes

A preview of the generated Applet appears on the right.

*The selected table’s fields are automatically added to a standard Applet layout.*

The preview includes input controls for the table fields, a data table, and navigation buttons. These elements can be modified later in the Applet Designer.

3. Review the selected fields and preview.
4. Select **Next**.

### Choose an Applet style

The **Style** step controls the initial colors and appearance of the generated Applet.

1. Select **Slate**.
2. Review the updated preview on the right.
3. Select **Next**.

*Select Slate as the initial style for the Asset Check-In Applet.*

{% hint style="info" %}
The selected style provides a starting appearance. Individual colors and visual properties can be changed later in the Applet Designer.
{% endhint %}

### Name the Applet

In the **Name** field, enter:

`Asset Check-In`

The preview updates to display the Applet name in its header.

<figure><img src="/files/xZNxfZajqyXPVRQnloQ2" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

*Enter Asset Check-In as the Applet name.*

Select **Create**.

### Review the generated Applet

DC Works creates the Applet and opens it in the **Applet Designer**.

*The newly generated Asset Check-In Applet in the Applet Designer.*

Because the Applet was created from an existing table, DC Works automatically generates an initial structure containing the table fields and ready-made pages and controls.

At this stage, the Applet has been created, but we still need to review and configure its generated structure before testing it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Creating an Applet from an existing table provides a functional starting point. The generated layout can be reorganized, restyled, and configured in the Applet Designer to suit the intended workflow.
{% endhint %}

### Next: Review the Applet structure

The next part of this guide will introduce the principal areas of the Applet Designer and explain the pages, fields, controls, and other elements generated for the Asset Check-In Applet.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.amltd.com/dc-works/getting-started/create-your-first-applet.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
